"....I remember playing some PvP games and in one game me and my band of rebels killed EVERYONE on an entire island. It got to the point where someone would see me and say "oh $*#$*@ it's (insert my name) RUN!" I became famous for my unfair slaughtering of the innocent. I would form bands of 10-20 people and we would find 1 person and would all swarm them and kill them and take all their things. We would even use objects to block people so they couldn't run. Another time we blocked a bridge connecting the world and forced everyone to pay us $$$ to get to the other side of the world. I certainly had a lot of fun doing that but I imagine the 100s of people that we did that to and how they felt about it. I bet many of them quit playing the game because of the totally unfair event that happened to them. What I was doing was great for me because I took pleasure in the unfair harassment of others but for the many other people they didn't like it at all. Game makers should make games where everyone benefits not create games where the power elite, hardcore games, and people with lots of online friends can prey on the innocent. Game makers should do everything they can to make sure griefers (like me) are kept in check.
If I/people want to fight monsters or do trade skills or whatever, why should YOU be able to ruin my gameplay or decide what I'm forced to do? If I wanted to fight vs. players I would do that. I don't want other people deciding for me what I do. I don't pay $$ a month to have other players force me to do something I don't want to do. I don't pay $$ to be killed by people with better equipment or levels while I'm innocently trying to play the game. I buy/play games to do what I want to do. That is why being able to choose whether I fight or not is a perfect system for me and I know a lot of people feel the same way.
Just because you can't FORCE everyone who plays to fight you, doesn't mean the system sucks. Yes it sucks that if someone pisses you off you can't make them pay but that's how the internet works. That's how the real world works. Rather than killing them you IGNORE them =) You find other ways to deal with them such as telling other people about them, find a way to keep them out of a COOL guild later on :) People create entire web sites to support the rating of other players which in turn could effect bad people negatively in the game. Or if what they are doing violates the rules you report them. Or you could possibly talk them into going to a PvP area where you could attack them.
I think you'll find that there is still plenty of do in player vs. player combat and the people that fight you actually WANT to fight rather than being pounced upon while they are trying to level up their characters. This means that player vs. player will be more challenging. It takes no skill to be a high level player killing newbies.
There are many people on the World of Warcraft team that are HUGE P vs. P player fans. They are on your side and they are working to make PvP as cool as possible! So don't worry. There are ways to make it very cool without forcing people who just want to play vs monsters/trade skills or traveling the land.
Wait until you hear everything we plan on doing. I think you'll find despite not being able to harass newbies and force people to fight you in every aera, you will still have plenty to do and will still have a lot of fun with our new ideas.
